Health advisory issued for Davis Island, Picnic Island beaches

The advisory comes after higher-than-acceptable levels of enterococci bacteria were found.

A health advisory has been issued for Davis Islands and Picnic Island beaches after levels of enterococci bacteria were higher than acceptable, the Hillsborough County Health Department said Thursday,

This means there is a potential risk to swimmers.

Enterococci normally inhabits the intestinal tract of humans and animals, which may cause disease, infections, or rashes. The presence of enteric bacteria is an indication of fecal pollution, which may come from storm water runoff, pets and wildlife, and human sewage.

The water will be resampled on Wednesday.
